Photography | Portuguese Women from the 50's

Photo by Jean Dieuzaide - Portugal, 1950's

For the occasion of International Women’s Day, I want to share with you some photos of Portuguese women, taken in the 50s by French photographer Jean Dieuzaide (1921-2003). Depicted in their daily lives, labors in the countryside and the sea, with children, single or in groups, these women let the testimony of a time, that although is gone, is not that far.

Children and young girls who appear there are perhaps the age of my mother and yet, thirty years after Portugal seemed already to have changed radically. These beautiful photos are both historical  and ethnographic documents, and examples of great artistic sensibility that I'm glad to share with you.

Athens Chronicles | Vintage Photos

The Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas (1858 -1946) traveled all across Greece for about thirty years, extensively photographing the country and its people.

The vast collection left by the artist portrays a reality that is partially missing and constitutes an interesting document at various levels.

The admiration and affection he felt for this country are apparent on his compositions, especially those in which the human element is central.

All images in this post were found in this site where you can still find pictures of several other locations in Greece captured by Boissonnas lenses.
