The Skye was the first restaurant that I visit in São Paulo. In fact, had just arrived from an intercontinental trip (Lisbon – São Paulo), of more than ten hours, and hubby, who certainly wanted to impress, took me directly from the airport (another hour by car!) to the restaurant.

Despite being exhausted, it is certain that I was impressed. The Unique Hotel (designed by architect Ruy Ohtake), on top of which is the restaurant, is absolutely stunning. The Skye has an independent entrance and we go up to the restaurant in a panoramic lift, but is when we get to the terrace, that the view of the São Paulo’s skyline sweeps us out of our feet. Looking to a city that continues to the horizon, with a drink in hand and the warm  November breeze touching the face, is almost possible to forget the long flight.

The view is gorgeous, the service is attentive and very professional and the dishes served rely on the creativity of Chef Emmanuel Bassoleil. Reflection of the cosmopolitan and multicultural character of the city of São Paulo, the restaurant menu is quite eclectic, been its inspiration from Brazilian, French, Italian and Japanese cuisine.

If your budget allows it, is certainly an experience that will please the senses. You can also visit the Skye for a drink or for breakfast.

Chronicles from Brazil | Street Art in Óscar Freire Street (São Paulo)

São Paulo and the Paulistanos are proud of the city's Street Art and this form of public art pieces is appreciated and protected by the citizens. There are many well-known artists on the scene, with different styles and approaches, but the quality of the work never ceases to amaze me.

Óscar Freire is one of the top shopping streets of São Paulo, with top tier shops, nice restaurants and bars. Is a great place to go on a Saturday and have lunch, buy some shoes (wandering is terrible for your shoes!) and look at some great Street Art. Some time ago, I even had the privilege to see some artists in action and it was absolutely great. When known, the name of the artist is in the photo caption.

Chronicles from Brazil | Mercadão (São Paulo)

The Municipal Market of São Paulo, affectionately known as Mercadão, is undoubtedly one of the places to visit in São Paulo.

In Mercadão one can find the most varied fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and seafood, and even pasta, sweets, spices, cheeses and cold meats. The way the fruits are arranged leaves us amazed and if you stay a little longer to enjoy any stand, it is certain that you will be offered some fruit to taste. However, despite the undeniable quality of fruits, the prices are thought to tourists and can be substantially higher than the average.

Upstairs, a large dining space allows you to sample different dishes while enjoying the architectural details of Mercadão. Although there are options for all tastes, the most celebrated choices in the Municipal Market undergo the traditional savory pastries with different fillings, cod fritters (Portuguese codfish cakes) and  bologna sandwiches (for those who really like bologna!).

Opened in the early 1930’s, and refurbished in the early 2000s, the Mercadão presents an eclectic architectural style and charms the visitors, especially with the stained glass work  that in its 32 panels show various aspects of food production.

Food Chronicles | Kaá Restaurante (São Paulo)

Kaá restaurant, the name comes from the Tupi “leaf, grass, bush”, is undoubtedly one of the nicest restaurants in the city of São Paulo. The discrete entrance in Jucelino Kubitschek Avenue does not let you guess the stunning architecture of the interior.

The room scale, combining indoor and outdoor elegantly, the water mirror and the vertical garden with lush greenery, as well as the setting of the bar and the ample seating areas, all contribute to the feeling of having entered a different world.

During the week the Kaá is an usual place for business meals, but especially on weekends is visited by families and groups of friends and, in any situation, it has always a very pleasant ambiance.

Although the prices are high, the friendliness and professionalism of the staff, as well as the quality of the dishes served make a trip to the Kaá an experience that you want, always, to repeat.
